Africa-BB-Maps

The Africa-BB-Maps project (2025–2028) is a four-year project implemented by the United Nations International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and funded by the European Union (EU), aimed at establishing or strengthening harmonised national broadband mapping systems in 11 Sub-Saharan national regulatory authorities (NRAs) in Benin, Botswana, Burundi, Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. These NRAs will use the new broadband mapping systems to map broadband infrastructure and service coverage to identify connectivity gaps, thereby enabling data-driven policies and investment decisions.

Over the next four years, the project will work with national and regional stakeholders to implement effective and sustainable systems, ensuring national ownership and alignment with the region’s evolving digital landscape. A key pillar of the project is the transfer of knowledge from Europe to Africa, drawing on the European regulatory and technical expertise landscape to support the design, implementation, and long-term sustainability of broadband mapping systems across the continent.

The Africa-BB-Maps project is part of a larger effort under the Africa-Europe Digital Regulators Partnership, which seeks to foster closer cooperation between the two continents in the field of digital infrastructure. By aligning with the European Union’s Global Gatewaystrategy, the Africa-BB-Maps project will contribute to the broader goal of creating a digitally inclusive world, where everyone has the opportunity to connect, learn, and innovate.

Over the next four years, the Africa-BB-Maps project will work closely with national and regional stakeholders to implement broadband mapping systems in the SSA region, ensuring that the systems established are not only effective but also sustainable and adaptable to the changing needs of the region in the long term.

This project benefits from the funding of the European Union.
